"A poem about a worm?"
you say, "Weird!"
Well, haven't you read poems
about things stranger,
Like "red wheelbarrows" and
"white chickens?"
We had a worm once...you might
say: rooming with us!
He was living in our fertile
tomato-growing box
out front.
I met him (a big nice pink earthworm)
on a cold December day
when I was digging to ascertain the
moisture level of the soil.
There he was, near the bottom---
alone and cold (after I exposed
him.)
I fed him our best bread---"winter wheat"
crumbled nicely, and covered him up.
Alas, he may have somehow been
unhappy with his "pad"
or had roving feet (so to speak)
for he is gone, somehow,
someway...
Either he moved on to fancier digs...
better dirt, and where people
feed him better---
or he was "worm-napped" by a
catfish fisherman.
He was okay and minded his own
business and we will miss
him.
