A COLD, CLOUDLESS, HAZY, WINTER DAY

O WHAT IF....
**************

All days in life were like yesterday?

A cold, cloudless, hazy, SKY---an
    unfriendly winter day...
With the sun low on the Southern
   horizon...

These days, the  people you see are
seemingly out to get their errands done...
To get some food, fill in on
    necessities...
and get back into cozy chairs in
    front of firesides...

The crocuses are not yet peeking
    though the snow in
         flower beds...too early
              yet...

The doves are long gone to a
    warmer clime...
The blue jays are quarreling somewhere
farther south, in the tops of
tall pines...

There are no robins yet, not a single one---
The garden is bare, the tomato plants
all gone... earthworms sleep deep
    in the soil, not moving---hibernating...

The trees, being mostly bare, are the
    big evidence that warm, balmy,
summer days, flowers, green lawns,
    growing times are gone,
for a season...

What if all the days of our lives were
    lived is such cold desolation?
No thunderheads billowing, no green
    grass...no flowers, no plants...
No cool summer breezes, no rain
    showers...

No lawn mowers heard---no kids
laughing and playing in the streets--
No dogs chasing frisbees...
No folks sitting on front porches.
watching the stars...in the evenings...

No maidens in summer dresses...
   "Born like vapors on the
summer air...tripping where the wild
    flowers play...?"
as Stephen  Foster, the "Summer Poet"
    wrote.

Ah,  but  yesterday, I also saw a big
mulberry tree... here in January, already
with the biggest BUDS on its every limb...

Just waiting.... to break though when the
    WARMTH COMES...

As If a PROMISE from the Creator---
    "There will be a SPRING!"
